Notes

The magician guards against his breath by holding the ring before his face. The name derives from the goddess Astarte (Ishtar) — a rare case of a fertility goddess recast as an infernal duke. Of his fall he claims he was punished unjustly.

Apocrypha

Before his fall Astaroth is said to have been a high-ranking angel — a Seraph or a prince of the Thrones — who sided with Lucifer in the War in Heaven and, as prince of accusers and inquisitors, helped decree Hell's nobility. He serves as Hell's treasurer, is attended by four demons (Aamon, Barbatos, Rashaverak and Pruflas), and demonologists counted him close to the ruling triumvirate of Lucifer, Beelzebub and Samael. He is treated as a demonized shadow of the goddess Astarte (Ishtar), and his signature was said to appear on the pact produced at the Loudun possession trial. The wiki further weaves him into the Hellboy mythos as the cambion's uncle, scheming for decades to draw him back to Hell to claim his infernal birthright.
