Notes

“A great liar, not to be trusted” — one must address him only through the magic ring, as with Astaroth. The name goes back to the biblical Baal-berith, “lord of the covenant” (Judges 8:33).

Apocrypha

Once a prince of the Cherubim order, Berith fell with Lucifer and became Hell's chief secretary and head of its public archives, notarizing pacts with the Devil and presiding as grand pontiff of the Order of the Fly. He is identified with Baal-Berith, the covenant god of Beirut and Canaan whose cult was crushed by King Abimelech — hence, the wiki suggests, his grudge against organized religion. Alchemists revered him as the power that transmutes base metals into gold, and during the famous Aix-en-Provence possession he reportedly volunteered the names of his fellow demons and of the saints most effective against them. Folk magic offered him a pact sealed with a black chicken's blood: twenty years of service, after which Berith claims his reward.
