His twin power over disease — to inflict and to heal — is typical of grimoire “physician” spirits: the power is understood as double-edged.
The wiki traces him to the Cherubim, describing him quite literally as the lion aspect torn from a Cherub that took on sentience and motion of its own. The name Barbas is linked to the Latin barba ("beard") and to hellebore, a plant used in witchcraft to invoke demons.
