Appears as

A monster at first, then a man's shape.

Office

Teaches astrology, geometry and the virtues of stones and woods; changes dead bodies from their graves and lights phantom candles upon them.

Notes

Named for the two-faced Roman Janus (Janus Bifrons). Folk tradition credited exactly such spirits with the wandering corpse-lights of graveyards.

Apocrypha

The wiki makes Bifrons a fallen Virtue who received an earldom in the northern province of Pandemonium, where his lights guide the dark roads of Hell. He is one of three demons with authority over the dead, shifting corpses between graves alongside Bune while Murmur claims the souls. Said to have longed for Heaven yet been too proud to repent, he also quietly opposed the reign of Mundus. The wiki equates him with Janus, Heimdall, Ganesha and Isimud, and names the angel Ariel — called his own sister — as his Shem HaMephorash adversary.
