A comely old man riding a crocodile, carrying a goshawk on his fist.
Teaches all languages, brings back runaways, casts down dignities and causes earthquakes.
He is under the Power of the East. Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum (1577) describes him in nearly identical words — one of the spirits whose image passed unchanged through every manuscript.
Before his fall Agares belonged to the angelic order of Virtues; the Book of the Office of Spirits places him under Oriens, mounted on a cockatrice rather than a crocodile. The Grand Grimoire lists him as a subordinate of Lucifuge Rofocale. Legend has him sealed in a brass vessel and sunk in a deep lake, or banished to "lower Egypt"; his name may derive from the Greek figure Argus.

Agares, (also Agarat, Agaros, or Agarus), is the second demon of the Ars Goetia summoned by King Solomon and a Great Duke of Hell.
Description
He is the First Duke of the East who appears as a fair old man or handsome man riding a crocodile and carrying a hawk on his fist. He teaches languages, fetches back those who run away, makes those who run stand still, causes earthquakes, and grants noble titles.
Overview
He overthrows supernatural and temporal dignities and can cause earthquakes. He was of the order of Virtues and oversees thirty-one to thirty-three legions. The Book of the Office of Spirits places him under Oriens and describes him as an old man riding a cockatrice, sans hawk.
The Grand Grimoire features him as a subordinate of Lucifuge Rofocale. Agares is reputed to have shut up in a brass vessel and cast into a deep lake or banished to the “lower Egypt" and also appears in the form of a Lord riding a crocodile and carrying a Peregrine falcon. He is said to make deserters return and can defeat enemies and finding pleasure in teaching immoral expressions
He might have taken his name after Greek figure of Argus.
